These results indicate that low-dose bee-venom-specific stimulation of T cell clones can preferentially stimulate IL-4 production and suggest that induction of IFN-γ production in T cell clones from allergic individuals requires higher doses of the allergen compared to clones from nonallergeic individuals.

of special interest. This paper is a first demonstration that responses of cord blood cells to various allergens are generated by T cells from the infants and are biased to high IL-4, IL-5, IL-9 and IL-13 production in virtually all infants. These findings imply that the key etiological factor in atopic disease may not be the initial acquisition of allergen-specific Th2-skewed immunity per se but instead may be the efficiency of immune deviation mechanisms, which in nonatopic individuals redirect these fetal immune responses toward the Th1 cytokine profile.
