In a sample of 106 adolescents, this study found that differential brain regions are activated by foods high in fat versus those high in sugar. A high-sugar milkshake caused greater activation in reward-related and gustatory regions, whereas a eucaloric, high-fat milkshake activated somatosensory regions. These findings suggest that foods high in sugar may be particularly rewarding and may warrant consideration in prevention and treatment efforts for problematic eating behavior.
