Some writers, most notably Randolph Nesse, have argued that depression may have adaptive utility in facilitating disengagement from futile goals, procuring care from close friends and family, and inhibiting the hasty take-up of new plans at times when the individual is poorly placed to realize them. While not discounting Nesse's claims, my argument draws on the considerable morbidity and mortality associated with depression to frame it as, in many cases, a formidable threat to the agent's interests.
