    • N This study shows that the pMFC is sensitive to the degree of cognitive imbalance. It further shows that self-report preference change induced by cognitive dissonance is long-lasting, and the area of the pMFC that was involved in cognitive imbalance overlapped with the dmPFC (negative outcome related region), but not with the pre-SMA (response conflict related region). This implies that cognitive conflict may have a distinct neural basis from other types of conflict. Furthermore, extending previous reports [6,8], this study found that not only either disagreeing with a liked group, but also or disagreeing with a disliked group activated the ventral striatum
