Metal nanoparticles with narrow size distributions have been synthesized in imidazolium-based ILs. The IL acts as a template for the formation of nanoscale structures and stabilizes the metal nanoparticles by the formation of "protective" anionic and cationic layers avoiding particle aggregation see Ref. [23].
