    • If we assume that there are x amine group on the surface prior to step a (Figure 1) and that following the reaction the number of the reacted amine group is y, the reaction yield is given by ylx. One reacted reagent 5 introduced one -NHCONH- and one -NHCOOgroup which both contributed to peak 1 in Figure 2 (top), thus the signal of peak 1 is given by 2y. The compound obtained following reaction with reagent 5 contains 40 C atoms, which contributed 40 to the total C 1s signal, while the unreacted amine (x-y) compound contained 5 C atoms, which contributed 5(x-y) to the total C 1s signal. Therefore the total C signal was given by 40y+5(x-y). From the signal ratio of peak 1 to the total C 1s signal, the reaction yield (ylx) was calculated to be 20%.
