    • An interesting variation of this method led to very different results. A solution of L2·3H2O (0.060 g, 0.26 mmol) in DMF (2 mL) was added to a solution of CuSO4·5H2O (0.065 g, 0.26 mmol) in the same solvent (2 mL, An aqueous solution of NaN3 (0.033 g, 0.51 mmol) was then added to the green solution. The colour immediately turned red and bubbling was observed with evolution of a colourless gas. A brown solid precipitated but we were not able to characterise it. This reaction was not observed in other solvents such as water or ethanol and the presence of azide ions was always required
