FGF2-induced chromatin remodeling regulates CNTF-mediated gene expression and astrocyte differentiation

M.R. Song, and A. Ghosh FGF2-induced chromatin remodeling regulates CNTF-mediated gene expression and astrocyte differentiation Nat Neurosci 7 2004 229 235 This paper demonstrates that extracellular signaling molecules can induce changes in histone methylation to regulate lineage-specific gene expression.

A small modulatory dsRNA specifies the fate of adult neural stem cells
-
T. Kuwabara, J. Hsieh, K. Nakashima, K. Taira, and F.H. Gage A small modulatory dsRNA specifies the fate of adult neural stem cells Cell 116 2004 779 793 This is the first demonstration that a noncoding, nuclear-localized RNA can participate in gene activation, not gene silencing, in adult neural stem cells. The NRSE dsRNA interacts with the REST-NRSF protein, and switches it from a repressor to an activator complex, to promote neuronal differentiation.
