    • Our further study reveals that when bulk Sn is used as catalyst, the elemental Si produced from SiO disproportionation would completely dissolve in the bulk liquid Sn without precipitation; therefore, VLS growth would be stopped. Otherwise, SiO2 nanoparticles would float on the liquid Sn surface and act as active nuclei for further growth of silica nanowires and form a highly ordered silica nanowire array on the liquid Sn surface
