The values of IF for the 4d transition-metal elements are almost constant along the series (IF ∼0.3 eV). We suppose that in the nitrides the trend is the same and adopt the value for MoN as representative of the whole series.

Kleinman (Ref.) and M. B. Kanoun and S. Coumri-Said (Ref.) performed first-principles calculations of electronic properties of PtN and confirmed that this compound crystallizes in the zinc-blende phase. R. Yu and X. F. Zhang (Ref.), also performing ab initio calculations, concluded that platinum nitride can be stabilized in the fluorite structure. Recently, other calculations (Ref.) investigated the pyrite Pt N2 structure that may explain the experimental observations. Thus the actual structure of platinum nitride remains a puzzle.

    • F. Leite, J. L. A. Alves, S. Azevedo, and R. de Paiva (unpublished). We found that the zinc-blende phase is more stable than NaCl, CsCl, wurtzite, and NiAs structures, respectively, by 114, 97, 20, and 58 meV for RhN and by 39, 130, 11, and 98 meV for PdN.
