The axial pyrazines were added because even after extensive sparging of the electrolyte with nitrogen, attempts to measure the electron-transfer rates to iron porphyrins without added pyrazine were confounded by an electrocatalytic current from the reduction of residual oxygen. Better oxygen removal from the electrochemical cell will be needed to meaningfully determine the role of outer-sphere electron-transfer rates on catalytically competent porphyrins.
