Hormonal regulation of B cell development: 17beta-estradiol impairs negative selection of high-affinity DNA-reactive B cells at more than one developmental checkpoint

Grimaldi CM, Jeganathan V, Diamond B. Hormonal regulation of B cell development: 17beta-estradiol impairs negative selection of high-affinity DNA-reactive B cells at more than one developmental checkpoint. J Immunol 2006; 176:2703-2710. The authors demonstrate that estrogen alters selection of high affinity autoreactive transitional B cells and enhances development into mature B cell subsets. Also discusses significance of low affinity autoantibodies.

Cutting edge: Hormonal milieu, not antigenic specificity, determines the mature phenotype of autoreactive B cells
-
Venkatesh J, Peeva E, Xu X, Diamond B. Cutting edge: hormonal milieu, not antigenic specificity, determines the mature phenotype of autoreactive B cells. J Immunol 2006; 176:3311-3314. The authors demonstrate that DNA-reactive B cells bearing the same heavy and light chain combinations can become either marginal zone or follicular B cells depending on type of hormone exposure. They also show that BAFF levels may be increased by estrogen, but not by prolactin and that estrogen can reduce the strength of the BCR signal.
