This schematic does not suggest that the nanotube-filled suspension changes between stable and unstable dispersion, but rather the level of interaction between PAA and SWNT is altered by changes in pH. Under all conditions the suspensions have a homogeneous, inklike appearance for short time periods (on the order of hours), but the higher pH suspensions are more exfoliated and structured (as evidenced by increasing viscosity shown in Figure 2). Over longer time periods (on the order of days), the low-pH suspensions remain homogeneous and the high-pH suspensions actually begin to exhibit macroscopic aggregation.

Sonication was performed for 20 min using a VirTis Virsonic 100 Ultrasonic Cell Disrupter (SP Industries, Warminster, PA). All sonication was performed with 50 W for 10 min followed by pH adjustment and an additional 10 min thereafter to achieve a homogenous suspension. The concentration of nanotubes was chosen to achieve 10 wt% by weight of the poly(acrylic acid) in solution.
