    • In electrical and optical applications of free-standing semiconductor nanowires, it is very important to properly passivate the surface in order to remove the surface states from the band gap. However, due to the complicated passivation process, the lattice structure at the surface of nanowires is not known and hard to determine with currently available experimental techniques. Here in our atomistic model we employ hydrogenlike pseudo-atoms to passivate the surface. This is, theoretically, a simple and effective way of passivation of semiconductor surfaces and has often been employed in atomistic model calculations for nanocrystalline structures; see, e. g., N.
