note
-
This effect has been confirmed by intentional creation of a harder oxide by the means of oxygen plasma treatment. The particles move on the oxide, leaving a trace visible after growth, along which a wide size distribution of whiskers is grown. This indicates that, not only do the molten particles move on the oxide, but also that the alloy sheds material and wets the oxide surface more randomly than the crystalline surface.
