    • Bussolati B, Deambrosis I, Russo S et al. Altered angiogenesis and survival in human tumor-derived endothelial cells. FASEB J. 2003, 10.1096/fj.020557fje. This formidable account of the characteristics of endothelial cell lines derived from many renal carcinomas describes how they differ from "normal" endothelial cells. The use of CD 105 to select these cell lines may have allowed a broader range of endothelial cell types to be isolated. Insight is provided into the profound differences in endothelial cells and the means by which tumor-derived endothelial cells have enhanced survival.

    • Lafleur MA, Handsley MM, Knauper V, et al.: Endothelial tubulogenesis within fibrin gels specifically requires the activity of membrane-type matrix metalloproteinases (MT-MMPs). J Cell Sci 2002, 115:3427-3438. This thorough paper delineates the role of matrix metalloproteinases (particularly MT1-MMP) in tube formation and concludes that inhibitors of these enzymes may be useful clinically to inhibit angiogenesis.
