Low-light-adapted Prochlorococcus species possess specific antennae for each photosystem
-
For the first time a rationale is given for the way in which the light-harvesting systems differ between different ecotypes of Prochlorococcus. The proteins encoded by eight different pcb genes of a very low light adapted ecotype form supercomplexes around photosystems I and II, whereas the single pcb gene of a high light ecotype codes for a photosystem II antenna. Although of different phylogenetic origin this finding shows a gene multiplication and functional specialization that is similar to the cab gene families of higher plants.

A novel evolutionary lineage of carbonic anhydrase (ε class) is a component of the carboxysome shell

2 at a concentration that would sustain optimal RuBisCO activity. By systematically expressing all genes for carboxysomal proteins in E. coli the authors showed that a previously unknown type of carbonic anhydrase is active in marine Cyanobacteria and chemolithoautotrophs such as Halothiobacillus. This paper is a masterpiece for a biochemical experiment based on genome-derived information.

Cyanophages infecting the oceanic cyanobacterium Prochlorococcus
-
The first report characterizing cyanophages that infect Prochlorococcus. The cyanophages fall into the three morphological families - Siphoviridae, Podoviridae and Myoviridae - with the latter cross-infecting among and between the different Prochlorococcus ecotypes as well as Synechococcus. These phage might mediate horizontal gene transfer over a wide phylogenetic distance.
