Naive CD4+ T cells from lupus-prone Fas-intact MRL mice display TCR-mediated hyperproliferation due to intrinsic threshold defects in activation
-
Zielinski CE, Jacob SN, Bouzahzah F, et al. Naive CD4+ T cells from lupus-prone Fas-intact MRL mice display TCR-mediated hyperproliferation due to intrinsic threshold defects in activation. J Immunol 2005; 174:5100-5109. This study uses transgenic T cells from lupus mice and non-lupus, H-2-matched control strains to compare calcium signaling and proliferative responses to the cognate pigeon cytochrome c T-cell epitope and its modified lower affinity peptides. The results demonstrate intrinsic hyper-responsiveness in T cells from lupus backgrounds.

Strain distribution pattern of susceptibility to immune-mediated nephritis
-
Xie C, Sharma R, Wang H, et al. Strain distribution pattern of susceptibility to immune-mediated nephritis. J Immunol 2004; 172:5047-5055. In this study, immune complex nephritis was induced in different mouse strains by immunization with rabbit immunoglobulin followed by injection of rabbit anti-glomerular basement membrane antibody. The results showed that despite a robust immune response, renal disease was strain-dependent. Thus, intrinsic end-organ susceptibility dictates renal disease.
