Elevated anti-malarial IgE in asymptomatic individuals is associated with reduced risk for subsequent clinical malaria
-
Bereczky S, Montgomery SM, Troye-Blomberg M, et al. Elevated anti-malarial IgE in asymptomatic individuals is associated with reduced risk for subsequent clinical malaria. Int J Parasitol 2004; 34 (8):935-942. This is one of the first reports demonstrating that anti-malarial IgE levels among individuals living in a region endemic for malaria are associated with a reduced risk for subsequent malaria disease, providing strong evidence for a dual role of specific IgE in susceptibility to allergic disease and resistance to intracellular parasitic disease.

Analysis of the 5q31-q33 locus shows an association between IL13-1055C/TIL-13-591A/G polymorphisms and Schistosoma haematobium infections
-
Kouriba B, Chevillard C, Bream JH, et al. Analysis of the 5q31-q33 locus shows an association between IL13-1055C/TIL-13-591A/G polymorphisms and Schistosoma haematobium infections. J Immunol 2005; 174 (10):6274-6281. As a follow-up to previous reports of linkage to resistance/susceptibility to schistosomiasis in chromosome 5q, this study demonstrates a significant association between promoter variants in the IL13 gene (IL13-1055C and IL13-591A) in a family-based study of Schistosoma haematobium resistance/susceptibility in Mali. The authors demonstrate association between the IL13 variants among children with the 10% highest infections, and that subjects with the IL13-1055T/T genotype are much less infected than individuals with other IL13 genotypes.

Adaptation to past malarial endemia and susceptibility to common diseases in modern populations: A study of adenosine deaminase and MN blood group genetic polymorphisms
-
Bottini N, Stefanini L, Lucarelli P, Bottini E. Adaptation to past malarial endemia and susceptibility to common diseases in modern populations: a study of adenosine deaminase and MN blood group genetic polymorphisms. Am J Phys Anthropol 2005. In this study, an association with a haplotype comprising adenosine deaminase (ADA) and MN blood group genetic polymorphisms (*L(M)/ADA*2), which is negatively correlated to allergic asthma and positively correlated to Crohn's disease in populations elsewhere in Italy, is negatively correlated with past malarial endemia among Sardinian schoolchildren, suggesting an increased susceptibility to malaria, leading to its decrease in areas with high malarial endemia.
