Models with all the molecules swiveled 0° or 30° from the perpendicular to the rows could also fit most of the criteria fulfilled by the herringbone model proposed here, such as film thickness or optimized van der Waals molecular distance, but not other as head-to-head arrangement. The latter, moreover, has a larger empty distance between rows, and consequently, the measured corrugation would be approximately equal to the alkane chain diameter (4.3 Å), much larger than the corrugation measured here (1.44 Å).
