By imaging at much higher loads, the thiol islands could be removed, leaving visible the bare gold underneath. In this way, we know when different islands were on top of the same terrace or not, and discard the possibility of dealing with islands on terraces separated by diatomic steps. The height of two monoatomic Au(111) steps is 4.7 Å.
