This insightful article discusses the application of several techniques including surface plasmon resonance, circular dichroism, electron microscopy, and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry to elucidate the nature of interaction between collagen IX and heparin and its possible role in maintaining the integrity of the extracellular matrix.

Results indicate protein-polyelectrolyte multilayer assembly proceeds in a manner similar to that on planar surfaces. Experimental techniques applicable to protein-polyelectrolyte multilayers on spherical surfaces are described.

Thibault A new approach for studying interaction of the polygalacturonase-inhibiting proteins with pectins Biochim Biophys Acta-Gen Subj 1621 2003 280 284 One of few pectin cognate systems reported in the literature. The binding of polygalacturonase inhibiting proteins (PGIPs) to polygalacturonic acid (PGA) was found to increase when the degree of methylation or acetylation of PGA was decreased, indicative of electrostatic protein-PGA interaction.

Dubin pH-induced coacervation in complexes of bovine serum albumin and cationic polyelectrolytes Biomacromolecules 1 2000 100 107 Macromolecular assemblies of complexes between bovine serum albumin and poly(diallydimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) were investigated at a pH range from 4 to 10 by turbidity, light scattering and phase contrast spectroscopy. It was found that temperature had no effect on neither on the pH of the onset of complexation (pHc) or on the point of initial coacervation (pHf). pHc was unaffected by an increase in protein: polyelectrolyte ratio, while pHf decreased.
