    • 25,31 The former, by analogy to the H-D method in size-exclusion chromatography, involves the quantitation of a ligand vacancy peak. ACE also involves the same process but commonly entails the measurement of mobility shift arising from ligand binding. The terminology for ACE arises from affinity chromatography since interaction between substrate and ligand is typically similar to the binding of protein to affinity columns. In our case, the interaction between substrate (polyelectrolyte) and ligand (protein) bears little resemblance to "protein-ligand" interactions, so we refer to this process as a Hummel-Dreyer approach.
