Angenon Boosting heterologous protein production in transgenic dicotyledonous seeds using Phaseolus vulgaris regulatory sequences Nat Biotechnol 20 2002 1265 1268 A novel seed-specific promoter from the common bean, P. vulgaris, was used to express a recombinant single-chain Fv antibody in A. thaliana. When the bean promoter was used, the single-chain Fv accumulated to levels nearly 40-fold higher than those achieved with the CaMV 35S promoter, and the recombinant antibody fragment remained functional and able to bind its target antigen.

    • Localization of a bacterial protein in starch granules of transgenic maize kernels
    • R.K. Chikwamba, M.P. Scott, L.B. Mejia, H.S. Mason, and K. Wang Localization of a bacterial protein in starch granules of transgenic maize kernels Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 100 2003 11127 11132 The authors show the unexpected localization of the enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli labile toxin B subunit within starch granules in maize endosperm tissue. This association facilitates copurification of the antigen with the starch fraction of maize kernels, conferring both thermostability during processing and resistance to peptic degradation in simulated gastric fluid digests. These are important attributes for an orally delivered antigen.

Stoger Unexpected deposition patterns of recombinant proteins in post-endoplasmic reticulum compartments of wheat endosperm Plant Physiol 136 2004 3457 3466 This publication describes the expression of three recombinant proteins (human serum albumin, legumin and phytase), each bestowed with different forms of targeting information, in wheat endosperm cells. Surprisingly, none of these proteins shows the expected localization pattern, indicating that typical protein trafficking pathways might vary in cereal storage tissues.
