Indeed, there are instances in nature, e.g., a recent study carried out on the high-avidity, reversible low-affinity multivalent interactions of the lectin XL35 with the jelly coat proteins surrounding oocytes in Xenopus laevis shows that they require a very long time to reach equilibrium, so long in fact that the partners do not attain true equilibrium on the timescale of the biological event, namely polyspermy, yet are such that their metastable mode of interaction is probably more than enough to guarantee an insurmountable physical block to polyspermy.
