Nanotubes provided by Hyperion Catalysis Incorporated (Hyperion Fibrils, CC grade). We blended 270 g of carbon nanotubes and 730 g of EVA (Quantum Microthene FE530) in a lab mixer. The nanotube-EVA blend was compounded, pelletized, and extruded (Brabender PL2000 Plasti-Corder) to produce a continuous ribbon (∼ 15 cm wide, ∼ 1 mm thick) of nanotube-EVA composite.

Oxidation of nanotubes [22,23] generates oxygen-containing functional groups. We do not know the composition of these functional groups. Based on our ability to conduct N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS)-ester couplings to the surface (Scheme 1), we hypothesized that carboxylic acid groups were present. FTIR showed no measurable signal for carbonyls. Since EVA contains oxygen, we were unable were unable to use X-ray photon spectroscopy (XPS) to measure additional oxygen introduced by oxidation of the surface.

The majority of the streptavidin was covalently coupled. Composites that were oxidized and activated with NHS-esters bound three times as much streptavidin as did composites that were oxidized but not NHS-ester activated.
