    • For consistent NT-tip alignment, the x-y piezo must be stabilized for many minutes. As a NT is pushed, tip deflection can jump suddenly toward zero. Slack is not changed by these events; therefore we associate such jumps with slips of the NT-tip contact. Favorable contact is achieved by trial and error. A low noise laser, available by special request from Digital Instruments technical support, suppresses laser interference effects that can contaminate tip deflection data.
