    • [19]). Artemether 3 (axial methoxyl) is sometimes referred to as β-artemether, to distinguish this compound from the "α"-epimer with an equatorial methoxyl group, in the malaria literature. This "convention," however, which has grown from the "normal" manner of representing structures of artemisinin and its derivatives in the voluminous literature of artemisinin derivatives (see refs. [2-7]), is the reverse of that normally used for designating the stereochemistry of sugars and their glycosides, in which, for example, α-D-glucopyranose possesses an axial hydroxy group. This inconsistency is unfortunate, but for convenience, here we continue to use the artemisinin stereochemical "convention."
