-
Moyad MA. Beyond prevalence: complementary and alternative medicine, radiation treatment, and breast and prostate cancer. J Brachytherapy Intl 2001; 17:237-254. This is one of the first reviews that examined lifestyle factors and supplements that may reduces the risk of side effects from radiation therapy. This review found that healthy dietary changes may reduces the risk of complications and most supplements have never been tested in humans during radiation treatment. Therefore, no supplements should be consumed during the time of radiation treatment until more research is completed.

Effects of a mushroom mycelium extract on the treatment of prostate cancer
-
Devere White RW, Hackman RM, Soares SE, et al. Effects of a mushroom mycelium extract on the treatment of prostate cancer. Urology 2002; 60:640-644. This study did not receive much media attention. However, it is one of the only studies to examine the effect of a popular supplement in men with prostate cancer. This study found that large intakes of a specific mushroom supplement had little effect by itself to lower PSA levels.

Diet and cancer: One view at the start of the millennium
-
Willett WC. Diet and cancer: one view at the start of the millennium. Cancer Epidemiol Biomarkers Prev 2001; 10:3-8. This article is a comprehensive review of lifestyle and supplement changes for overall health. It emphasizes the need to focus on the risk of cardiovascular disease for most patients. It also suggests that multivitamins may have an important role for health in many individuals.

Baseline characteristics and the effect of selenium supplementation on cancer incidence in a randomized clinical trial: A summary report of the Nutritional Prevention of Cancer Trial
-
Duffield-Lillico AJ, Reid ME, Turnbull BW, et al. Baseline characteristics and the effect of selenium supplementation on cancer incidence in a randomized clinical trial: a summary report of the Nutritional Prevention of Cancer Trial. Cancer Epidemiol Biomarkers Prev 2002; 11:630-639. This is a follow-up investigation of the randomized trial of selenium from the University of Arizona. Researchers found that selenium supplements may lower the risk of a variety of cancers if individuals have low baseline levels of plasma selenium. However, it also found an increase in cancer risk for those that took selenium and had a higher level of baseline plasma selenium.

Selenium and vitamin E supplements for prostate cancer: Evidence or embellishment?
-
Moyad MA. Selenium and vitamin E supplements for prostate cancer: evidence or embellishment? Urology 2002; 59 (suppl 4A):9-19. This paper is a comprehensive review of all the data that supports and negates the use of vitamin E and selenium supplements for men with and without prostate cancer. This paper assists the clinician in terms of deciding who is the ideal candidate for these supplements, and it provides dietary sources of this vitamin and mineral.
