    • As we don't see the pure gold surface, the measured heights of the dendrimers are probably underestimated by the height of the monolayer of HDT. Various measurements (e.g. Poirier, G., E., Pylant E., D. Science 272 1145-1148 and ref. therein) suggest that the HDT molecules (which are about 2nm long) stand tilted by 30 degress from the surface normal. We therefore used an assumed height of 1.73nm for the HDT layer
