    • Phenotype of mice and macrophages deficient in both phagocyte oxidase and inducible nitric oxide synthase
    • Mice deficient in both phagocyte oxidase (phox) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (NOS2) had a phenotype distinct from that of either parental strain or any other reported strain that mobilizes normal numbers of phagocytes: marked susceptibility to spontaneous infections from commensal organisms. However, these mice and their macrophages retained some ability to kill Listeria, Salmonella and E. coli, establishing definitively the existence of macrophage antimicrobial mechanisms independent of both phox and NOS2
