J Clin Endocrinol Metab 1998; 83:1083-1088. This paper describes the first therapeutic use of the calcimimetic NPS R-568 in a patient with parathyroid carcinoma that could not be treated with any conventional therapies. A calcimimetic agent acutely suppresses parathyroid hormone levels in patients with chronic renal failure
-
Antonsen JE, Sherrard DJ, Andress D. A calcimimetic agent acutely suppresses parathyroid hormone levels in patients with chronic renal failure. Kidney Int 1998; 53:223-227. This paper describes the short-term effect of NPS R-568 on plasma PTH levels in hemodialysis patients with mild hyperparathyroidism. The authors observed not only the decrease in plasma levels of PTH, but also the increase in those of calcitonin, both of which may contribute to the reduction in bone turnover in osteitis fibrosa.
