The incidence of ulcer and the number of bleeding ulcers were greater in the 8 weeks following the devastating earthquake than in the same 8-week period the previous year. This suggests that emotional stress increases the incidence of serious peptic ulcer disease.

Am J Physiol Gastrointest Liver Physiol 1997, 273:G399-G403. Gastrin immunoneutralization abolished sham feeding-stimulated acid secretion, indicating that gastrin plays a principal role in the cephalic phase of gastric acid secretion. Atropine also abolished the response, implying the involvement of muscarinic receptors. Cholinergic neurons are known to stimulate gastrin secretion directly and indirectly by inhibiting somatostatin secretion.

Am J Physiol Gastrointest Liver Physiol 1997, 273:G281-G288. Identified L-type voltage-dependent calcium channels on human gastrin cells and demonstrate that influx of extracellular calcium through these channels mediates β-adrenergic agonist-induced stimulation of gastrin secretion. It is postulated that β-adrenergic agonists increase gastrin secretion by elevating cAMP levels, resulting in activation of protein kinase A and phosphorylation of L-type subunits and leading to influx of extracellular calcium.

    • +-ATPase at their cell surfaces. This implies that the cytoplasmic tail of the β subunit is necessary for removing the pump from the apical membrane and returning it to the tubulovesicular compartment. Moreover, the transgenic mice develop gastric ulcer disease and a hypertrophic gastropathy resembling Menetrier's disease.
