This work shows that highly differentiated epithelial cells are capable of changing to an M-cell phenotype in response to signals from immune cells. Thus, cells lining the gastrointestinal tract have much greater plasticity in their function and phenotype than had been thought.

J Immunol 1998, 160:455-466. Although PMN movement to the lumen of the gastrointestinal tract was described over 30 years ago, the mechanism that drives this movement previously had not been characterized. This work indentifies a soluble factor, secreted by IEC, that is largely responsible for directing this PMN movement.
