Conversion by Peyer's patch lymphocytes of human enterocytes into M cells that transport bacteria
-
Kerneis S, Bogdanova A, Kraehenbuhl JP, Pringault E: Conversion by Peyer's patch lymphocytes of human enterocytes into M cells that transport bacteria. Science 1997, 277:949-952. This work shows that highly differentiated epithelial cells are capable of changing to an M-cell phenotype in response to signals from immune cells. Thus, cells lining the gastrointestinal tract have much greater plasticity in their function and phenotype than had been thought.

Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) transfers its receptor for intimate adherence into mammalian cells
-
Kenny B, DeVinney R, Reinschied D, Frey E, Finlay B: Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) transfers its receptor for intimate adherence into mammalian cells. Cell 1997, 91:511-520. This description of a pathogenic E, coli strain inserting its own tyrosine kinase into host mammalian cells, and the role this kinase plays in subsequent E. coli-host interactions, are indeed seminal works. It creates a new paradigm in bacterial-host interactions.

Apical secretion of a pathogen-elicited epithelial chemoattractant (PEEC) activity in response to surface colonization of intestinal epithelia by Salmonella typhimurium

J Immunol 1998, 160:455-466. Although PMN movement to the lumen of the gastrointestinal tract was described over 30 years ago, the mechanism that drives this movement previously had not been characterized. This work indentifies a soluble factor, secreted by IEC, that is largely responsible for directing this PMN movement.
