Is the regulation of apoptosis altered in smooth muscle cells of adult spontaneously hypertensive rats?
-
Diez J, Panizo A, Hernández M, Pardo J: Is the regulation of apoptosis altered in smooth muscle cells of adult spontaneously hypertensive rats? Hypertension 1997, 29:776-780. This article demonstrated that regulation of apoptosis is altered in cardiac cells of spontaneously hypertensive rats and that the local renin-angiotensin system may be involved in such an alteration.

Cardiomyocyte apoptosis and cardiac angiotensin-converting enzyme in spontaneously hypertensive rats

Díez J, Panizo A, Hernández M, Vega F, Sola I, Fortuño MA, Pardo J: Cardiomyocyte apoptosis and cardiac angiotensin-converting enzyme in spontaneously hypertensive rats. Hypertension 1997, 30:1029-1034. This article showed that the timing and mechanisms responsible for apoptosis and hypertrophy of cardiomyocytes are different in spontaneously hypertensive rats. Whereas hypertrophy seems to be an earlier alteration that develops in parallel with hypertension, apoptosis develops later in association with overactivity of the local ACE.

Increased cardiomyocyte apoptosis during the transition to heart failure in the spontaneously hypertensive rat
-
Li Z, Bing OHL, Long X, Robinson KG, Lakatta EG: Increased cardiomyocyte apoptosis during the transition to heart failure in the spontaneously hypertensive rat. Am J Physiol 1997, 272:H2313-H2319. This is an interesting report showing that increased numbers of apoptotic cells are present in failing SHR hearts. Administration of the ACE inhibitor captopril, which ameliorates heart failure in this model, is associated with a reduction in the exaggerated apoptosis that accompanies heart failure.
