39. The LiCl additive was only necessary in the reaction with tributyl(vinyl)tin. In its absence, the vinyl coupling did not go to completion. While the mechanism for why LiCl is beneficial in some Stille couplings is still unclear, it has been seen previously to aid in driving reactions to completion; see refs 15b, 15e, and 15f.
