    • Rick Lytel received the Ph.D. degree in physics 1'rom Stanford University, Stanford, CA, in 1980. He is presently a Distinguished Engineer at Sun Microsystems Laboratories. Palo Alto, CA. His present work includes optical interconnects, molecular and quantum compulation, and physics of computing. Prior to joining Sun in 1998, he was Executive VP and General Manager of Akzo Nobel Photonics, a company he started in 1993 and in which he and his team delivered the first active polymer waveeuide devices to market. He was Technical Director of Lockheed's Photonics Research Initiative from 1984 to 1992 and was a Research Scientist at Lockheed from 1980 to 1984. He has published more than 100 papers and is a frequent speaker at national conferences, companies, and universities. Howard L. Davidson (Senior Member, IEEE) received the Ph.D. degree in physics from Wesleyan University, Middletown, CT. He is currently a Distinguished Engineer aï Sun Microsystems Laboratories.

His previous research areas include integrated circuit testing, supercomputer design, ultralight satellites, high thermal conductivity thermal materials, and electronic instrumentation. HO is a recognized authority on physical system design. He has presented many papers, invited papers, and tutorials on high-speed digital system design, thermal management, and optical interconnects for digital systems. He is the author of the chapter on inspection and testing in Mitltichip Module Design, Fabrication, & Testing. He has received 16 patents. Dr. Davidson is a member of APS and AAAS. He has chaired the IEEE Computer and System Packaging Workshop and the IEEE Workshop on High Speed Interconnections Within Digital Systems. He has served as an Associate Editor for SEEE TRANSACTIONS ON VLSI SYSTEMS. Nyles Nettleton is presently a Staff Engineer at Sim Microsystems Laboratories. Palo Alto, CA. He is currently involved in the design and development of massively parallel computer systems, with additional projects in real-time control and optical interconnects. He has been involved in many aspects of computer systems, including graphics, diagnostics, performance analysis, and processor, and system design. He is also interested in nanutechnology, gas turbine design, and rocketry, Theresa Sze received the B.S.E.E. degree from the University of Illinois, Urbana, and ihe M.S.E.E. degree from the University of New Mexico, Alburquerquc. She is a Member of Technical Staff at Sun Microsystems. She is presently working on optical interconnects. While at SUP., she has also worked on CMOS device optimization, circuit design, and computer system level design.
