London: Paul Chapman.As well as looking at aspects of emotion, this book discusses the policy framework and shows how this has meant that leaders are often swallowed up by the demands made on them.
4. Hochschild, A.R. (1983) The Managed Heart: Commercialization of Human Feeling. Berkeley: University of California Press.This is a classic book for anyone who is interested in the original research and how Hochschild developed the idea of emotional labour. It is both highly readable and intellectually stimulating.

9. Southworth, G. (1995) Looking into Primary Headship: A Research Based Interpretation. London: Falmer.This is an in-depth study of one primary head.
10. Denzin, N. (1984) On Understanding Emotion. San Francisco: Jossey-Bass.I found this book very useful in understanding the intensity of emotion and how it relates to our own personal context.

London: Heinemann.Mentioned in this chapter, and probably out of print, but if you can get hold of a copy this is an underrated classic. It focuses on a long-term study of a secondary school in Bristol. Although dated in many aspects, from the point of view of emotion and leadership, I think it still has a great deal to say.
