This is a predecessor volume to the one above. This volume has a similar mix of policy and practice papers; including topics such as an analysis of the impact of Inquiry reports by Brian Corby and another important chapter on the opening up of a new residential unit by a local authority. Both these collections also include a critical review of developments in secure care in England

Bob is an inspiration to many for his long-standing commitment to live in the disadvantaged communities in which he has worked. This is a sympathetic, but not uncritical, account of how a large children's department evolved. It describes the changes in its residential units in the context of the wider changes in child care that were happening at the time. This is an important volume because little has been written about residential care in the era of the children's departments (1948-68)

Based on a three-year national research study, this book explores the state of residential child care at grass roots level and compares the present situation to that of ten years previously in 1987. Using material gathered from week-long visits to individual homes, the authors draw upon their own conclusions to make recommendations for policy, practice and the future management for children's homes

This article focuses on policy development, and sets the current emphasis on partnership in the context of prevention-an important but often ambiguous concept. It has often been noticed that many social workers appear to view preventing admission to care as identical to preventing family break-up

This study looked at a cohort of 242 children who had experienced at least one year of being looked after, across six local authorities in England. The paper explored what children did and did not like about being looked after.
