    • US Burden of Disease Collaborators. The state of US health, 1990-2010: burden of diseases, injuries, and risk factors. JAMA 2013; 310: 591-608. Excellent manuscript that measured the burden of diseases, injuries, and leading risk factors in the USA from 1990 to 2010 and compared these data to 34 other Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries. Two hundred ninety one diseases/injuries, 1160 sequelae of these diseases/injuries, and 67 risk factors (or risk factor clusters) were measured. The leading risk factors for disease were dietary risks, tobacco smoking, high BMI, high blood pressure, high fasting plasma glucose, physical inactivity, and alcohol use. There was improvement in both life expectancy and healthy life years of life over the past 2 decades, but the rate of improvement lagged in the United States versus other OECD countries.

    • Gems D, Partridge L. Genetics of longevity in model organisms: debates and paradigm shifts. Annu Rev Physiol 2013; 75: 621-644. Comprehensive, thought-provoking review of the biological basis of aging that reexamines central concepts of aging including the free radical theory and new theories, such as the hyperfunction theory. This theory hypothesizes that much of age associated disease is hypertrophic and hyperplastic due to processes that contribute to growth and reproduction at younger ages running unchecked into later life. Incorporates the latest data on a signaling network that includes insulin- IGF-1 and target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling. This network has FOXO3 as a major regulatory gene, is sensitive to nutritional status (nutrient-sensing pathway), and in response modulates growth, stress resistance, and aging.
