    • Use of a commercially available solution of (-)-DIP-Cl was essential for the efficiency of this transformation. Reactions conducted with solid (-)-DIP-Cl (from a freshly-opened bottle) yielded only small amounts of product, and much unreacted 9. A similar observation has been made before, with Mickel and colleagues' key (+)-DIP-Cl-mediated step in their large-scale synthesis of (+)-discodermolide being unsuccessful until they employed a 70% solution of (+)-DIP-Cl in hexane, rather than using the 'hygroscopic and inherently unstable' solid form of the reagent (Mickel, S. J.; Niederer, D.; Daeffler, R.; Osmani, A.; Kuesters, E.; Schmid, E.; Schaer, K.; Gamboni, R. Org. Proc. Res. & Dev. 2004, 8, 122).
