As pointed out by one of the reviewers, strictly speaking, the present system is not "electrochromic", because the backward ring opening process is not promoted electrochemically. Because, however, the closed isomer can be converted to the open isomer by a combination of reduction-visible light irradiation processes, the present system is herein regarded as "electrochromic", as also noted for the related systems appearing in parts of ref. 34
