Commun. 27 1967 157 162 where S1, S2, S3,..., Sn and S1′, S2′, S3′,..., Sn′ correspond to the enzyme subsites on either side of the scissile bond. Each subsite accommodates a corresponding amino acid residue side chain designated P1, P2, P3,..., Pn and P1′, P2′, P3′,..., Pn′ of the substrate or (inhibitor). S1 is the primary substrate specificity subsite, and P1-P1′ is the scissile bond.
