Sequelae due to bacterial meningitis among African children: A systematic literature review
-
10.1186/1741-7015-7-47 19751516 This article gives a comprehensive review of data on sequelae of bacterial meningitis in children from the African continent. The highest in-hospital case fatality ratios observed were for pneumococcal meningitis (median = 35%) and Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib) meningitis (median = 25%). Moreover, pneumococcal and HiB meningitis cause clinically evident sequelae in a quarter of survivors prior to hospital discharge

Corticosteroid administration and outcome of adolescents and adults with acute bacterial meningitis: A meta-analysis
-
10.4065/84.5.403 1:CAS:528:DC%2BD1MXmtVWhtLg%3D 19411436 A systematic review and meta-analysis that was performed by searching several databases for reports (published from January 1966 through February 2008) of placebo-controlled randomized trials of corticosteroid use in the treatment of adolescents and adults with acute bacterial meningitis. The meta-analysis suggests that adjunctive corticosteroids are beneficial in the treatment of adolescents and adults with bacterial meningitis in patient populations similar to those seen in high-income countries and in areas with a low prevalence of HIV infection

Apoptosis is essential for neutrophil functional shutdown and determines tissue damage in experimental pneumococcal meningitis
