    • For the purposes of the discussions herein, zwitterionic complexes are defined as those species that formally lack conventional Lewis resonance structures that place an anionic charge onto one of the donor atoms of the ancillary ligand. Under this formalism., coordination complexes of many common ligands, including (pyrazolyl)borates, acetylacetonates, and β-diketiminates, for which resonance derealization of the anionic charge onto the donor atoms is likely to be prevalent, are not classified as zwitterionic. Dinuclear complexes that feature formally cationic and anionic PGM centers fall outside the scope of this review.
