    • To determine the orientations of the perylene diimide core on Au (111), the growth of the PTCDI-C8 films from sub-monolayer to multilayers was studied by scanning tunnelling microscopy. A well-ordered film with a monolayer height of 0.21 nm and surface unit cell of a = 1.8nm, b = 1.6nm, γ=88° can be observed for the first layer, indicating that the core is lying flat on the Au (111) surface. However, the structure changed to a = 0.84nm, b = 0.47nm, γ = 82°, with a height of 2.07nm beyond the first layer, revealing the core is standing up on the Au surface, see Supporting Information.
