LC-MS (liquid chromatography mass spectroscopy) analysis after HPLC purification indicated partial hydrolysis (ca. 10%) of the ethyl ester of the epoxysuccinate moiety. Hydrolysis of epoxysuccinate esters in aqueous environment has been reported and it has been suggested that these esters serve as pro-drugs of the corresponding carboxylic acid (J. P. Meara, D. H. Rich, J. Med. Chem. 1996, 39, 3357-3366).
