Barta Interactions of Arabidopsis RS domain containing cyclophilins with SR proteins and U1 and U11 snRNP-specific proteins suggest their involvement in pre-mRNA splicing J Biol Chem 279 2004 33890 33898 The authors identify cyclophilin proteins as interactors with SR proteins. They demonstrate the accumulation of cyclophilins in nuclear bodies that are different from Cajal bodies. The recruitment of cyclophilins to SR-containing speckles suggests a role in pre-mRNA splicing.

M.H. Han, S. Goud, L. Song, and N. Fedoroff The Arabidopsis double-stranded RNA-binding protein HYL1 plays a role in microRNA-mediated gene regulation Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 101 2004 1093 1098 The authors demonstrate an important function for HYL1 in miRNA metabolism that affects levels of both miRNAs and their target mRNAs. HYL1 is found in a macromolecular complex and in nuclear bodies and ring-like structures. This evidence suggests, for the first time, that the localisation of factors for miRNP biogenesis or function parallels the RNP formation of other small RNAs. The authors highlight the link between miRNAs and plant hormone signalling.

Nucleocytoplasmic partitioning of the plant photoreceptors phytochrome A, B, C, D, and e is regulated differentially by light and exhibits a diurnal rhythm

S. Kircher, P. Gil, L. Kozma-Bognar, E. Fejes, V. Speth, T. Husselstein Muller, D. Bauer, E. Adam, E. Schafer, and F. Nagy Nucleocytoplasmic partitioning of the plant photoreceptors phytochrome A, B, C, D, and E is regulated differentially by light and exhibits a diurnal rhythm Plant Cell 14 2002 1541 1555 The authors demonstrate that phytochromes A-E all localize to speckle-like structures but are differentially regulated by light. In addition, they found that speckle formation requires functional phytochromes and is therefore important to the biological activity of phytochrome signalling.

Characterization of the requirements for localization of phytochrome B to nuclear bodies
-
M. Chen, R. Schwab, and J. Chory Characterization of the requirements for localization of phytochrome B to nuclear bodies Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 100 2003 14493 14498 The authors describe different stages in the formation of phytochrome-containing speckles under different light conditions, and show that large domains correlate with strong light response. A genetic screen identified dsf (defective in speckle formation) mutants that will help to elucidate the structure and function of these domains.

J. Li, T. Kinoshita, S. Pandey, C.K. Ng, S.P. Gygi, K. Shimazaki, and S.M. Assmann Modulation of an RNA-binding protein by abscisic-acid-activated protein kinase Nature 418 2002 793 797 The authors demonstrate the important phenomenon of phosphorylation-regulated binding of specific mRNAs by hnRNP proteins. This binding results in the formation of speckle-like domains, which have potential roles in the sequestration or protection of mRNAs under stress.
