    • Small-molecule probe is a term familiar to many academic scientists. It is related to (although not the same as) proof-ofconcept compound, a term familiar to many pharmaceutical industry scientists. Small-molecule probes are in general not as advanced as proof-of-concepts compounds (the former are generally used in cells, whereas the latter are used in animals), but they are on a path that can yield the latter.
