    • p53 is regulated by the lysine demethylase LSD1
    • Evidence is provided here that p53 is subject to demethylation by the previously described histone demethylase, LSD1. This indicates that methylation is dynamic, regulated by methylases and demethylases, and is likely to generally regulate protein function beyond histones. In addition, a model is proposed that the different status of lysine methylation at the same site (monomethylation or dimethylation) correlates with distinct biological outcomes.

    • Gene-specific modulation of TAF10 function by SET9-mediated methylation
    • This report shows that SET9, which methylates purified histone H3K4, but only poorly methylates nucleosome H3K4, is more likely to methylate the TFIID protein TAF10 as a physiologically relevant substrate. Cells expressing methylation-deficient TAF10 show lowered transcription of a subset of TAF10-dependent genes. These results illustrate the importance of examining the biological relevance of SET enzyme substrates, which had previously been believed to be histones.

    • This article showed that lysine methylation plays a role in regulating the function of a membrane-associated receptor, VEGFR. VEGFR's kinase activity is enhanced by methylation, providing an interesting regulatory mechanism by the modification.

    • Structural basis for the methylation state-specific recognition of histone H4-K20 by 53BP1 and Crb2 in DNA repair
    • The structural basis of the interaction between 53BP1 and histone H4K20me2 is provided to show why a dimethylated substrate, rather than trimethylated, is specifically bound by the double tudor domains of 53BP1.
